Environmental concern is commendable quality
01/16/2006

To the Editor: Thursday's editorial criticized Mike Ewall of ActionPA for having the audacity to express his concerns about the proposed coal gasification/liquefaction plant at a public hearing in Schuylkill County.

Perhaps Mike should have recognized that we here in Schuylkill County do not require, nor will we tolerate, unsolicited input from Philadelphians.

On the other hand, it seems that this editorial is showing either xenophobic tendencies or an absence of objectivity. In either case, it failed Schuylkill Countians and does not bode well for the area's future.

My take on this is thank goodness there are Mike Ewall's around who give a darn about people and the environment — people who have nothing to gain but a sense of satisfaction from trying to improve everyone's air, water and quality of life.

Sure we need the jobs, but we must also breathe the air.

It is my fervent hope that Ewall and his counterparts continue their activism and participation, but this surely will be a difficult and frustrating task.
