Controversial projects should be questioned
01/24/2006

To the Editor: An editorial by definition is a newspaper or magazine article explicitly stating opinions held by an editor or publisher. With all due respect regarding the opinion on controversial issues in Schuylkill County, I am appalled at the lack of respect expressed toward Mike Ewall and opponents of the same controversial issues.

I don't think anyone claims to be a scientist or an expert - just average citizens trying to get information about projects.

How many supporters have looked at project applications and drafts?

How many have ventured into a Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) office to review permit applications or new proposals?

How many ever review existing permits regarding footprints, complaints, compliance, fines, penalties, consent and agreement orders, water sources, discharges, analytical data, etc.?

How many even know if they are governed by local or county zoning?

Many controversial projects have been proposed or already exist in the county. MSW and C&D landfills, sludge, dredge, medical waste, fly ash, CAFOs, hazardous waste and co-gen plants are some. Now we want to add the coal-to-oil and a proposed ethanol plant.

Is there something wrong with this picture? Why is Schuylkill County so inviting for projects that other counties reject?

I agree with the gentleman requesting a cumulative impact study. I suggested one as early as 1991.

Until someone addresses the cumulative impact of what is buried, land applied and spouting in the air, we are ALL sitting ducks waiting for this potential toxic slop to raise its ugly head.
