Coal-to-oil plant opposed To the Editor: I believe the construction of the coal-to-oil refinery will cause mine subsidences in Shenandoah and surrounding areas. Shenandoah has had mine subsidences in the past and mine fires. There are numerous sink holes in the borough. You can see sulfur fumes rising now from the abandoned mines at the southeast end of Shenandoah. There is a strong smell of sulfur when you walk along the highway past Girard Park and toward Sandy Beach. There was a mine fire around that site in the past. Apparently it isn't out yet. We don't need another Centralia. Water is worth more than gold today. A German reporter on television said she believes the next war will be fought over water. She showed pictures of many African peopled lined up at a spring. They carried three-gallon jugs to the spring.
